Does Your Vehicle Need An Oil Change? What To Look For
Part of owning a car is knowing when you’re due for an oil change. Motor oil protects your engine by lubricating the moving parts to help fight the buildup of friction and heat to ensure smooth performance, optimal fuel efficiency, and reliable acceleration.
Keeping these signs in mind, you can tell if your car, truck, SUV, or minivan is in need of an oil change.
4 Ways You Can Tell Your Car Needs an Oil Change
Some vehicles feature a maintenance light on the dashboard that illuminates when it’s time to change the oil. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, this light turns on when you’ve reached a set interval of miles since its last reset.
When you step on the gas pedal, does your vehicle spring to life like the day you brought it home, or is the power weaker than usual? Maybe you’re sitting at a red light and notice the car is vibrating or rattling.
In both cases, the engine may not be oiled properly, causing the pistons and calipers to move roughly while the engine is on. This is a good indicator that it’s time to replace the current oil with a fresh version.
It’s good practice to check your oil at least once a month, and if you’re finding that the oil level in your car is consistently low, you may have something more going on, such as a leak.
However, if the oil is low due to the length of time it’s been in your engine, you’re due for a change.
What’s the Color?
After removing, cleaning, and re-inserting your dipstick, check the color of the oil. If the oil is a honey or amber color and you can see the dipstick through the oil, you’re in good shape. If the oil is dark in color and you can’t see through it, it’s time to get it changed.
You can also test the oil by rubbing it between your finger and thumb. If you feel any grittiness, that could be bits of carbon that aren’t getting filtered out, which means your filter is in need of replacement. While wearing latex gloves, if you feel metal flakes, that could indicate something more severe happening in your engine.
