Does Your Volkswagen Need New Tires?
Your tires experience a lot of wear and tear throughout the lifespan of your car, and you’ll eventually need to have them replaced. Most people are unaware of exactly when is the right time to get new tires. That’s why we’ve compiled some of the most common warning signs for you to watch out for.
Read on to learn more.
What are the Signs Your Volkswagen Needs New Tires?
Diminished tire tread depth
Your tires’ treads should never go below one-sixteenth of an inch, and if you’re regularly driving on wet or slick surfaces, you’ll want twice that depth. To determine if your tire treads are too low, take a standard penny and insert it into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If his entire head is visible, then your treads are worn down, and the tire needs replacing.
Tire tread indicator bars
Newer tires have tire tread indicator bars that are built right into the tires. When the tires are brand new, the bars are barely visible, but they begin to appear gradually as the tread wears down. If more than one or two of the bars become visible on the tire, it’s time to replace them.
Cracks in the sidewall
Inspect the sidewall of your tires for cracks or tracks, which appear as grooves that can be seen by the naked eye. These cracks are often indicators of a leak, which means your tire is losing air. This could lead to a blowout down the road. The moment you see these cracks start to appear, you’ll want to contact your local dealer about getting new tires.
Bulges and blisters
As the outer surface of a tire begins to weaken, it can develop bulges and blisters that will extend outward from the surface. These weak spots can rupture at any moment, which can also lead to a dangerous blowout. Check your tires often for any major blisters, especially if you drive on rougher roads.
